Knitting My Day Away

It´s all about the knitting baby!

6 sweaters in 6 months

An old classmate of mine asked me if I could knit a few sweaters for a photography project he was working on.  He wanted 6 sweaters and asked if I could have them done in 6 months.  I started working on them right away, using only materials I already had.  The most time consuming part was ripping up old sweaters and cutting down t-shirts, but it was a lot of fun and definitely something I would do again.

Bella:

Bella is made from left over Lopi that I had from 3 or 4 different traditional Lopi sweaters I had made.   She was knitted in once piece from the hood down, you have to look closely to see the hood…..glimpses of it on the right (her right) side.  I love her extra long sleeves!   They sorta remind me of bells, which made me think of our dog Bella.

Anna:

I had some off white wool left over from a sweater I made a few years back for my daughter.  I ripped apart an old wool sweater my husband found up in the attic (hadn’t been worn for years).  I used the blue yarn from that sweater and the left over wool and knit with 2 strands.  Anna is also knit from top down and the ”pockets” are just openings and not actual pockets.  I remember calling her something else when I was knitting her, but I cannot remember what it was.  I now call her Anna which is my aunts name.

We had a bunch of old black t-shirts that we didn’t really wear.   I cut them into strings and rolled them up.  I found this old belt and cast on from there and knit up to the neckline.  I used big sized circular needles, 2 of them broke………the 3. one lasted from about the middle to the top.  It was a little hard on the hands, but not that bad.  The worst part was cutting down the shirts, little particles of fabric were all over the place, I was covered in it as well…..but it was a fun process, and even though I swore at the time I would never do this again, I think I just might……

Haddy:

An old cotton blend turtleneck was ripped up to make Haddy.  She is knit in one piece from top down.  When I first saw the picture she reminded me of  a sweater my mom had years and years ago.  Every time I look at it I think of my mom and that´s were the name comes from. Haddy is my mother’s  nick name.

Hafsteinn:

The dark blue color is the same wool yarn I used to knit Anna.   The other 3 colors are the same wool yarn from that same old sweater.  Hafsteinn is knit in one piece from one sleeve to the other.  He reminds me of the ocean, that’s why I call him Hafsteinn: Haf= ocean and steinn=rock/stone.

Lykkja:

I had an old sweater I hadn’t worn in years, it was over sized, button down and  made with silk/wool blend yarn.  After taking it a part I knit Lykkja.  She is also knit in one piece from the top down.  I started with the rib in the neckline, folded it over and knit through 2 stitches at a time to double the neckline.  I named her Lykkja because of the unraveled stitches here and there.

Hólí Smók!

It´s been a while, time flies when you´re having fun! ;) I have been knitting.  Nothing crazy though.  Started a sweater for my son, didn´t finish it…….too warm for it now anyhow…..I´ll finish this summer and he can wear it in the fall.  I did some dog sweaters, trying a new design, wasn´t happy with it……somehow the yarn just didn´t fit that design……but I´ll keep trying!

Right now I´m doing a few hats that I am going to give to All We Knit is Love.  I’m using a pattern that I used making a hat for my daughter last fall.  It´s been a while since I have followed a pattern, it´s mindless and simple, but at the same time it feels creative.  It´s exactly what I need at the moment.

I am using the pattern I used for this hat (designed by me and my daughter) to make the hats I´m working on at the moment

Back into the swing of things???

p1060877.jpgNew New year, new beginnings….or perhaps, continuing what I started a while ago and never stuck to!?  That´s it! (talking about this dear blog of mine…..)

I might as well write all my deepest and darkest secrets on here, don´t think anybody is reading anyway!  HAHA!  But I won´t, ’cause I don´t have any deep dark secrets…………;)

So, to the knitting.  I have been knitting like crazy ( You drive me crazy…..love that song!).  I am working on a project with my friend Oddvar from back home.  He is an awesome creature, I luv him a whole lot!  He asked me to make a few sweaters for him to use in his photography project.  I am almost done….just a little bit left and then putting the ends away and washing them, which is always fun!

The idea was to not buy any yarn for this project, and I do not have a stash of yarn stashed around the house.  At least not untouched balls and skeins, pretty much all I have is just left overs.  So I took apart a couple of old sweaters I had laying around.  And then I used some left over Lopi…..that one is a one big STRIPE.  I´m finishing the last two now, hopefully done by the end of this week.  I don´t want to post any photos as of now…..they´re a bit of a secret for now ( I´m a little bit country, I´m a little bit rock´n roll)

Then it´s just been the usual, knit for the kids and the dogs.  I gave my 2 precious cutie pa tutie dogs a hoodie each, and they came in handy….it´s been freezing over here.  (that was their Christmas present)

My daughter helped me design a hat for her.  She knew how she wanted it shaped and drew the picture (sketch is a fancier word for it I guess).  Then she wanted a vine rapped around with leafs on it.  She loves her hat, and the mittens I made to go with it.  Then my son asked for the same kind of mittens.  He thought they were so incredible cool…….they have a opening so you can stick your fingers out……he said he really needed that kind.  So that´s what I will be doing next……..and a hat like my daughters for my friends daughter ( who informed me that she had never had a hat like that, which translates to: I want one…..pretty please)  And I really want to make her one too, I love when kids want me to knit for them…..just makes it all seam more worth while doesn´t it!

A friend of mine used to tell me how she would love to be able to knit or crochet.  She had bought some needles and books a few years back and started, but never stuck with it.  She finally picked up her hook again and she can´t stop!  It´s one finished object after another.  We try to have a knitfast (knit while eating breakfast) once a week……not that I knit fast during that time….

This is D.J. in pink, my model is a little too slim for the sweater…….or the sweater a little too big for the model….. which ever way you prefer to look at it.  (D.J. in black is up top)
